The names are Norman’s finish names; the colors above are approximate.

Why quarter-sawn matters in a wet climate.

A wood slat is a thin strip of a living material. Cut the wrong way, it cups and twists as the humidity swings from a wet November to a dry July. Normandy® slats are quarter-sawn from sustainably sourced hardwood, which is the cut that stays flat, and the finish seals the wood on all sides.

That still does not make wood a bathroom blind. Keep it in the dry rooms: living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, offices, and the front windows people see from the street. For a window that gets steam or splashes, we bring faux wood instead.

  • Sustainably sourced premium hardwood, quarter-sawn slats.
  • Wider-panel design: one blind where two used to be needed.
  • Advanced cordless lift that stops where you leave it, without drifting.
  • SmartPrivacy® route holes hidden at the back of the slat.

Where wood blinds belong.

Living and dining

Grain next to the floor

A stained slat that matches oak or maple flooring reads as part of the room, not as a covering.

Home office

Warm, not clinical

Wood softens a room full of screens. Tilt for glare, close for calls.

Bedrooms

Quiet privacy

SmartPrivacy® closes the light gaps; for full dark, pair with a shade or see the blackout options.

Street-facing windows

Curb appeal

A painted white wood blind looks finished from the sidewalk and matches painted trim.

Not for bathrooms, laundry rooms, or the window over the sink. See faux wood blinds for those.

Choosing the finish at the visit.

Wood blinds are matched to something in the room. We bring the swatches; you bring the room.

  • Match to the floor, the trim, or the furniture, and pick one; matching all three never works.
  • Look at stains on a gray day and a bright one. Pacific Northwest light shifts warm tones.
  • Painted white wood next to painted trim: compare the whites, they are not all the same.
  • Valance style: Contempo, Designer Crown, or Linear, matched to the trim profile.
  • Cordless for reachable windows; a wand for the ones behind furniture.

Wood blind questions.

Will wood blinds warp in Seattle humidity?

In a normal living room or bedroom, no. The slats are quarter-sawn hardwood and sealed on all sides. In a bathroom or over a kitchen sink they can, which is why we install faux wood there.

Can you match my floor stain?

We match to the closest Normandy® stain from the swatch set at the visit. Bring a plank or a drawer front and we compare in your own light.

Are wood blinds heavy to lift?

They are heavier than faux wood, but the cordless system is built to hold the blind at any height without drifting, and the wider-panel design keeps the count of blinds down.

Do they come with SmartPrivacy?

Yes. The route holes sit at the back of the slats, so the pinholes of light you see through ordinary blinds are hidden. Details on the privacy blinds page.

Hardwood blinds for Seattle-area homes

Wood blinds are the horizontal blind for rooms where the finish matters: a living room with hardwood floors, a dining room with stained doors, an office with wood shelving. Norman’s Ultimate™ Normandy® wood blinds use sustainably sourced hardwood with quarter-sawn slats, and PAPABLINDS measures and installs them in Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, and nearby communities.

Stained or painted???

A stain shows the grain and matches wood floors and furniture; a paint hides it and matches trim. In an older Seattle home with fir trim and oak floors, a stain such as Oak Mantel or Taupe usually carries the room. In a newer Eastside build with white millwork, a painted Pure White or Silk White slat disappears into the trim. Bring a floor plank or a cabinet door to the visit and we match in your light.

Wood blinds or wood shutters

Both give real grain at the window. Blinds cost less, lift out of the way completely, and suit rooms that change often. Shutters are a permanent architectural piece with a frame and a heavier presence. For a whole front elevation, shutters; for a single office or bedroom, blinds. Our wood shutters page covers the other side of that choice.

Where wood does not go

Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and the window over the kitchen sink. Moisture and wood slats do not mix, and we say so at the visit. Those windows get faux wood or aluminum, which look right next to the wood blinds in the rest of the house.

Care

  • Dust with a soft cloth or a vacuum brush; no wet cloths.
  • Tilt the slats one way, dust, then the other way.
  • Keep the blind out of direct water and away from a humidifier.
