Mercer Island, Washington
Blinds, shades, and shutters on Mercer Island, where every window has a view.
Mercer Island homes look west at the Seattle skyline and the sunset, east at Bellevue and the morning sun, or into the trees of the central plateau. Mid-century houses, waterfront rebuilds with walls of glass, and Town Center condos each ask something different of a window. PAPABLINDS brings Norman® samples to your house, measures every window, and installs the order.
Mercer Island homes, window by window.
The island is a plateau with ravines running down to the water, so most houses face the lake on a slope: west toward Seattle and the sunset, or east toward Bellevue and the sunrise. The west side gets the four o’clock glare straight through the living room; the east side gets it in the bedroom at 5 a.m. in June. Solar and sheer shades on the west, room-darkening with side channels on the east, and the view left alone in between.
The houses split by era. The 1950s and 1960s houses have low ceilings, wide windows, and shallow frames that favor outside mounts; the waterfront rebuilds have floor-to-ceiling glass that only motorized shades handle well; Town Center condos are inside mounts on metal frames with an HOA looking at the outside. Tree cover on the plateau keeps many houses dim in winter, so light-filtering fabrics come first there.
- Solar and sheer shades on the west-facing glass.
- Room-darkening with side channels on east-facing bedrooms.
- Motorized banks on waterfront window walls.
- Outside mounts on the mid-century frames.

The same four steps on one bathroom window and on a whole house.
- 1Request a visitSend the form or call. We agree a time and ask which rooms and windows you want to cover, so we bring the right samples.
- 2Samples in your roomsShutters, blinds, and shades in real materials, held against your own windows in your own light. Colors are matched to your trim and floors on the spot.
- 3Measured by usEvery window is measured by the person who will install it: frame depth, reveal, handles, and how the window opens. The order matches the window, not an estimate.
- 4Installed and walked throughInstallation is finished cleanly, and you get a walkthrough of tilt, lift, or motorized operation before we leave.

Is the in-home visit in Mercer Island really free?
Yes. The visit, the samples, and the measurement are free, and the quote is written for your windows, not from a price list.
Who measures and who installs?
PAPABLINDS does both. One company from the first visit to the final walkthrough, so nothing is lost between a salesperson and an installer.
Will a solar shade hide the view of Seattle?
No. A 3 to 5 percent openness cuts the glare and heat and the skyline stays visible through the weave. At night with the lights on you will want a second layer for privacy.
Do you work with the HOA rules in Town Center?
Yes. We check what the building allows on the outside, usually a white or off-white backing, and choose the fabric and mount to match.
What brands do you install?
Norman® shutters, blinds, and shades: Woodlore®, Woodlore® Plus, AquaShield™, and Normandy® shutters; Ultimate™ faux wood, Normandy® wood, Synchrony™ vertical, and CityLights™ aluminum blinds; Portrait™ honeycomb, Soluna™ roller, Centerpiece™ Roman, PerfectSheer™, SmartFold™, and SmartDrape™ shades.

Homes in Mercer Island
Mercer Island houses face the water from a slope: west toward Seattle and the sunset, east toward Bellevue and the sunrise. Solar and sheer shades handle the west-facing glare while keeping the skyline, room-darkening shades with side channels handle the east-facing bedrooms, and the mid-century houses on the plateau take outside mounts on their shallow frames. Waterfront rebuilds with walls of glass are motorized work.
What to have ready for the visit
- Which shore the house faces, or whether it sits in the trees on the plateau.
- The age of the house, since 1950s frames want outside mounts.
- Whether the building has HOA rules on the outside appearance of coverings.
