Nursery Blackout Shades

Nursery blackout shades: dark for the 1 p.m. nap, nothing to pull.

A nursery shade has three jobs: make the room dark in the middle of a June afternoon, have no cords anywhere, and move without a sound. Cordless room-darkening honeycomb, blackout rollers, and SmartFold™ shades, all certified Best for Kids, installed by PAPABLINDS across the Greater Seattle Area.

Where a nap-time shade leaks.

The fabric is rarely the problem. Light comes in at the edges, and the mount decides how much.

light shows along both edges

Inside mount, no channels

A line of light along both edges. Enough to keep a baby looking at the window instead of sleeping.

side channels: no gap for light

Side channels

Channels along the frame close the gaps: LightGuard 360™ on rollers, optional channels on honeycomb.

window behind the shadethe fabric overlaps the frame, nothing to leak past

Outside mount

The shade overlaps the frame on the wall. No gap to leak, and the darkest result on a shallow window.

Cordless is not optional here.

Cords are the one thing a nursery window cannot have, and every shade on this page is cordless and certified Best for Kids: SmartRise™ on honeycomb, cordless lifts on rollers and SmartFold™, AutoWand™ where you want a motor without a remote. There is nothing to loop, nothing to pull, and nothing hanging within reach of a crib pushed against the wall.

Quiet is the second requirement. A cordless shade is silent; Norman® Smart Motorization is quiet enough to lower the shade with the baby already asleep, and a schedule closes it before nap time without anyone entering the room.

  • Cordless on every shade, certified Best for Kids.
  • Room-darkening fabric plus side channels or an outside mount.
  • Motorized with a nap-time schedule if the crib is under the window.
  • Wipeable fabrics; the roller is the easiest to clean.

Nursery questions.

How dark does a nursery shade really get?

With a room-darkening fabric and side channels or an outside mount, dark enough that a June afternoon looks like evening. A plain inside mount leaves light at the edges; we show the difference at the visit.

Are these safe with a crib under the window?

They are cordless and certified Best for Kids, so there is nothing to pull or loop. We still recommend an outside mount above the reach of a standing toddler and a motorized version if the crib has to sit under the window.

Will the motor wake the baby?

Norman® Smart Motorization runs quietly, and a schedule moves the shade before nap time rather than during it. A cordless shade makes no sound at all.

What happens when the nursery becomes a big-kid room?

The same shade keeps working; you change the fabric only if you want to. DayNite™ shutters are the option for a room that will be a bedroom for the next fifteen years.

Nursery blackout shades in the Seattle area

PAPABLINDS installs nursery and kids’ room shades in Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, and the surrounding communities. The requirements are dark, cordless, and quiet, in that order, and the products that meet all three are Norman® Portrait™ honeycomb shades in room-darkening fabrics with SmartRise™ cordless lift and optional side channels, Soluna™ roller shades in room-darkening fabrics with LightGuard 360™ channels, SmartFold™ shades, and, for the room that will be a bedroom for years, Woodlore® Plus or Normandy® shutters with DayNite™. Every one is cordless and certified Best for Kids.

Dark means the edges too

A room-darkening fabric stops the light through the shade. The light around it, along the edges of an inside mount, is what keeps a baby awake at one in the afternoon in June. Side channels on honeycomb and roller shades, or an outside mount that overlaps the frame, close those edges. Motorization with a nap-time schedule closes the shade before you carry the baby in.

What to have ready for the visit

  • Where the crib is, or will be, in relation to the window.
  • Which way the window faces and whether a streetlight is outside it.
  • Whether you want the shade to run on a schedule.

Request a free in-home visit and we will hold a room-darkening sample against the nursery window in daylight.
